This is a continuation of our last post. We are only working on the mahogany body and getting close to the final shape.

Thickness plane the body to 1 3/4″ and trace the body outline on the body blank.

Mahogany body blankAfter tracing the outline, I used a band saw to cut out the shape and making sure to leave about 1/16″ – 1/8″ at the edge. This will make routing the final shape a lot easier. Mount the template to the body blank using 2 screws placed where the pickup cavities will be.

Template attached to bodyUsing a router, route the shape with a flush trim bit. Before removing the template you need to transfer the center line to the body blank. Use a square to continue the center line onto the back side. After removing the template also label the top and bottom.  This will help to prevent mistakes later.

Next we will be routing out the control cavities and the cavity plate recesses.

This is my first attempt at a guitar build blog. I will be building a Les Paul style guitar and be using the parts that we sell at Philadelphia Luthier Tools & Supplies.   There will be lots of pictures and detailed explanation of the process.  I’m hoping that this will be a great resource that my customers can use.

First, we will be gathering all the wood and parts needed for this project. All the wood was sourced locally at Exotic Woods in S. Jersey.

We will be updating our progress a couple of times a week.

16. February 2011 · Comments Off on Custom Engraved Truss Rod Cover · Categories: New products

Engraved truss rod coverA great way to customize your guitar is to replace the truss rod cover. The most important step is to make sure you get the correct replacement. Measure the center to center hole spacing to confirm the truss rod cover you are ordering will fit.

We are now offering custom engraved truss rod covers for Gibson, Epiphone, PRS, PRS SE, and Ibanez. We will be offering other styles soon. We will also be expanding our line to include aftermarket that are hard to find.

Our goal is to provide the most accurate reproduction at an affordable price. The plastics we are using are as close to the original when possible. Our TRCs are engraved and filled with white acrylic paint. This process makes for very durable engraving that won’t wear out. Gibson truss rod covers are currently hot stamped that looks like engraving and is more like printing. Our engraving process allows us to accommodate the most requests and special designs.

The truss rod covers are made of 2 and 3 ply black/white plastic. The lettering is white but can be in other colors. The truss rod covers are made to order and can be engraved in 7 different fonts. You can have up to 2 lines and up to 20 characters per line (depends of truss rod cover). Please visit our website at Philadelphia Luthier Tools & Supplies. If you have any special requests or questions please contact us at support before ordering.

This is a great way to increase the appeal of your instrument and make it look like a custom guitar!
